Dean Harris ’72 was featured in an April 26 Advertising Age article titled “The Player” about his role as chief marketing officer for telephone company Vonage, which provides local and long distance service over the Internet. Harris, who majored in sociology and anthropology at Carleton, explains the benefit to his business of studying those areas: “When you do marketing, in effect, you’re studying groups, which is essentially what you do in social science,” he said.

Rabbi Daniel Lapin will present a convocation address titled “Restoring Respect for the Dignity and Morality of Business” at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, April 30, in the Carleton College Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Jenny Wahl, professor of economics, wrote a commentary for the April 23 Star Tribune titled “Governor used stock to build a soapbox.” Wahl wrote about Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty’s use of the state pension fund’s control of nearly $500 million in Pfizer stock to support a resolution at the Pfizer stockholders meeting that would make Pfizer lower its prices.

Carleton was ranked 25th in the number of Merit Scholars who enrolled in 2003, according to the April 9 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Carleton, the top liberal arts college on the list, enrolled 79 Merit Scholars in fall 2003. Overall, 8,254 freshman Merit Scholars enrolled in colleges and universities this year.

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, with guest conductor Joseph Silverstein and violinist Sarah Chang, will give a concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 at Carleton College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The program will include Mozart’s Symphony No. 33 in B-flat, K. 319, Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat for Strings, Op. 20, and Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53. The event is open to the public. Admission is free to all Carleton and St. Olaf College students, faculty, staff and alumni. A $10 admission fee ($7 for senior citizens and non-Carleton/St. Olaf students) will be charged for all other attendees

Dartmouth College history instructor Christopher Schmidt will present a convocation address titled “The Making of Brown v. Board of Education” at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, April 23 at Carleton College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Internationally known taiko (Japanese drum) performing artist Kenny Endo will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Carleton College Concert Hall. Endo will be accompanied by Gao Hong, adjunct instructor in Chinese musical instruments on pipa (Chinese lute) and Dave Hagedorn, assistant professor of music at St. Olaf College, on percussion. The event, co-sponsored by Carleton’s Asian studies program and Committee for the Studies in the Arts, is free and open to the public.

The first-ever Foro Latinamericano, presented by Carleton College’s Latin American studies program and focusing on Brazil, will take place on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24. Foro Latinoamericano provides the students, faculty and alumni of Carleton’s Latin American studies program, along with the community at large, the opportunity to participate in a major event involving contemporary Latin America.

Carleton will hold a seminar on Islam on Saturday, April 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The event is titled “Islam and the Politics of Muslim Identity.” The speakers for the event are Shaykh Abdul Haqq Sazonoff and Paul Hardy. This event is about Muslim identity in America and the need for Muslims to tap into their rich tradition of spirituality so to answer controversial questions and polemics that have plagued them since September 11, 2001. There also will be a question and answer session at the end of the seminar. The event is free and open to the public.

Carleton College has announced that Jason B. Matz has been appointed to the newly created position of Chief Investment Analyst, effective May 3. Matz comes to Carleton from Jeffrey Slocum & Associates in Minneapolis, where he served as Director of Global Equity Research.
