Michael Church, a junior mathematics major from Harrisburg, Penn., has received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for Excellence in Education. Established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, the award is meant to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.

For the eighth straight year, businesses, employers, Community Education and Recreation, and Carleton and St. Olaf colleges will collaborate with numerous volunteers for Northfield Community Day of Service.

A group of Carleton College, Northfield High School and Northfield School of Arts and Technology (ARTech) students will present a puppet performance titled “A Battle Against the Forces of Apathy, Hopelessness, and Cynicism” at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 in Northfield’s Central Park. The event is free and open to the public.

Sean Bryan, a Carleton senior geology major from Cincinnati, Ohio, presented research at the 38th annual meeting of the North-Central Section of the Geological Society of America in St. Louis, Ill., in April. Approximately 400 geoscientists attended the event hosted by the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences of St. Louis University.

Gail Nelson, professor of mathematics, received the Certificate of Meritorious Service from the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The award recognizes Nelson’s commitment to the mathematics community and dedicated services to the MAA.

The Carleton College International Festival, an annual campus-wide celebration of the world’s cultures, will be held on Saturday, May 8, between 2 and 4 p.m. in Sayles-Hill Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Poet Carolyn Forché will give a lecture titled “The Poetry of Witness” and read from her latest book of poetry, “Blue Hour,” at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 9 in Severance Great Hall at Carleton College. A part of Carleton’s Christopher U. Light Lecture Series in the Arts and Literature, Forché’s lecture will address the works of poets who have endured the impress of extremity—warfare, exile, and imprisonment—in the 20th century. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing.

The Carleton College Symphony Band, directed by Ronald Rodman, associate professor of music, will perform at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8 in the Carleton College Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Carleton president Robert A. Oden Jr. was featured in an article titled “The Lure of It All” about his interest in fly-fishing in the April 30 Chronicle of Higher Education’s Short Subjects section. “If you’re not catching fish, you’re doing something wrong…The key to fly-fishing is being dramatically impatient,” Oden said.

Amy Tenute, assistant professor of physical education, athletics and recreation and head softball coach, was featured in an April 28 Star Tribune article titled “Carleton softball coach achieves her 100th win.” Tenute, in her seventh year as head coach, has led the team to a .500 or better finish in each of the last four seasons in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, the longest streak in school history.
