Anna Moltchanova, assistant professor of philosophy, presented two papers this spring. The first, titled “Neo-Platonic and Byzantine Influences in the Thought of Pavel Florenskii,” was given at the International Congress on Medieval Studies and the second, titled “A Pragmatic Definition of Nationhood,” was presented at the American Philosophical Association Pacific Division Mini-Conference on Global Justice.

James “Jim” Fisher, the John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Anthropology, will lead a team of anthropologists from Himalayan Health Exchange doing research in the Indian Himalayas this summer.

Julie Neiworth, professor of psychology, gave a Minnesota Psychological Association Distinguished Scholar Lecture at Macalester College and published a related articled in the May 2004 issue of Minnesota Psychologist titled “Testing the Awareness, Recognition, & Thinking of Primates Other than Humans.” The article was co-authored with Richard Parsons ’00 and Janice Hassett ’03.

Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a May 14 Newsday article titled “Public Polls: Waning Support” that analyzed American sentiment toward the war and President Bush after the Iraq prison abuse scandal and a prolonged war. “We’re right in the middle of a big churn, and it’s hard to tell where it will go,” Schier said about the upcoming presidential election.

Carleton will honor artist Warren MacKenzie, Dr. Marian Neutra, a 1960 Carleton graduate, and Stanford professor Lyman Van Syke, a 1951 Carleton graduate, with honorary degrees during Commencement Exercises on Saturday, June 12.

The Carleton Pro Musica, directed by Anthony Holt, will give a concert titled “Swan Song” at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 14 at the Carleton College Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Andrew Noss of the Wildlife Conservation Society will present a lecture titled “Camera Trapping Jaguars and Other Mammals in Bolivia’s ‘Green Hell’ ” on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in Carleton College’s Gould Library Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.

The Carleton Players will present Naomi Iizuka’s “Polaroid Stories” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 13 through Saturday, May 15 in Carleton College’s Arena Theater. David Wiles, associate professor of theater, directs the show. The performances are free and open to the public, though advance reservations are recommended.

Neil Lutsky, professor of psychology, gave an invited address titled “On Spinning Webs: Developing Local Web-Based Modules for Introductory Psychology” at the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association (RMPA) annual meeting as part of the RMPA President’s Symposium. Lutsky also led a workshop on using PowerPoint in the classroom and served on a panel discussion on teaching.

Chiara Briganti, professor of English, published a co-authored article titled “Hanté par les maisons: L’espace domestique et le roman domestique anglais” in a volume of essays titled Espaces Domestiques: Construire, habiter, représenter.
