    Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an August 25 Minnesota Public Radio story titled “President’s seventh visit to Minnesota to raise campaign funds.” Schier commented on Minnesota’s importance as a swing state for the election. “Minnesota is a real target state for the Bush campaign,” Schier said.

Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an August 24 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article titled “Region a fund-raising target” about increased national political fundraising in the upper Midwest. “What Minnesota voters are thinking and are concerned about will be more important to national politics than they have in decades,” Schier said.

    President Robert A. Oden Jr.‘s participation in a Minnesota International Center panel was noted in an August 21 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article titled “International Center offers program on three religions.” The presentation “Diverse Traditions–Common Ideals” was designed to discuss the relationship of Christianity, Islam and Judaism to the natural world and to governments, and the fundamentalist elements in each religion.

    KaShia Tasli “MaiKia” Moua ’99 was recently honored with the Hmong Women’s Leadership Award by the Hmong Women’s Action Team of Saint Paul. Moua received the award for her work as founder and director of the Hmong Women’s Circle and her involvement with Hmong National Development, Inc. She was described in the award presentation as “driven, bold and peaceful.” Moua majored in sociology/anthropology at Carleton.

    Carleton was mentioned on the August 20 CNN Live Today television show. Rob Franek, survey director and author of The Princeton Review’s “The Best 351 Colleges” was interviewed. The interviewer noted that Carleton was among the schools listed in the book as having the best professors, according to the students taking the surveys.

    Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an August 17 San Jose (Ca.) Mercury News article titled “Schwarzenegger, Ventura share traits, not campaigns.” Schier commented on the differences between the 1998 Minnesota and 2003 California gubernatorial races. Regarding comparisons to Jesse Ventura, Schier said, “[Schwarzenegger]’s got a different party affiliation, a different temperament, a different background, and is really in a different situation than Jesse was.”

Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an August 13 San Francisco Chronicle article titled “Schwarzenegger’s candidacy energizes unlikely California voters.” Schier commented, “This recall is all about getting rid of the conventional politician.” The story was picked up by Associated Press and ran in news outlets nationally and internationally.

    Lynn Hunt ’67 has been elected to the American Philosophical Society, the country’s oldest learned society founded by Benjamin Franklin and friends over 250 years ago. Hunt majored in history at Carleton and is currently the Eugen Weber Professor of European History at University of California, Los Angeles.

    Carol Rutz, director of the college writing program, and Carolyn Sanford, head of reference and instruction, received a grant from the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Engagement Project, funded through the Mellon Foundation, to support an ACM conference at Carleton on information literacy and writing across the curriculum in August 2005.

    Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, wrote an op/ed for the August 10 issue of the Star Tribune titled “Divergent party platforms reveal the state’s great divide.” Schier comments on a forthcoming book by Joel Paddock, a political science professor at Southwest Missouri State University, that surveyed political party chairs in 2000 and analyzed state party platforms in 2002. Among the interesting findings: Minnesota’s party platforms rank as the sixth most-polarized out of the 31 examined. Schier comments that, in this case, “the tone of political leadership matters greatly…It is a matter of looking beyond the partisan true-believers to provide leadership for all Minnesotans.”
