7 October 2003Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, commented on the upcoming election rematch between former Minnesota Representative Bill Luther (D) and incumbent freshman Representative John Kline (R) in the October 7 “State by State” column of The Hill. Schier believes there is no issue in the district that could hurt Kline.

Susan Singer (biology) working on science education project.
5 October 2003As part of her work for the National Research Council’s Committee on Undergraduate Science Education (CUSE), Susan Singer, professor of biology, is working on a joint project between CUSE and the Committee on Science Education K-12. The project is focused on the misalignment of secondary and postsecondary science education.

5 October 2003Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an October 10 Associated Press article titled “Jesse Ventura’s MSNBC debut” about the former Minnesota governor’s new television talk show. “The real question,” Schier said, “is whether he can listen to anybody else and have a conversation with them.”

3 October 2003Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in an October 3 CNN story titled “Howard Dean connecting with college students.” Schier commented on the rarity of presidential candidates attracting college students this early in the election process and gives Dean credit for doing so.

Composer George Crumb to Give Convocation Address
3 October 2003Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb will give the convocation address at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10 in the Carleton College Concert Hall. That evening, the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota will perform a concert of Crumb’s music at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. These events are part of the Christopher U. Light Lectureship in Music and are free and open to the public.

Light Lectureship in Literature Presents Yevgeny Yevtushenko
2 October 2003Poet and playwright Yevgeny Yevtushenko will present a lecture titled “Russian Poetry at the Crossroads” on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. On the following evening, Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall, he will offer a poetry reading in Russian and English. Both events are sponsored by the Christopher U. Light Lectureship in Literature, and are free and open to the public.

Lightner Presents Movement and Performance Workshop
2 October 2003Guest lecturer Babette Lightner will offer a workshop titled “Ease in Performance” on Thursday, Oct. 9 in the Concert Hall. Sessions are offered from noon to 1 p.m. and from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. The workshop will combine lecture, discussion and activity, and is free and open to the public.

2 October 2003Carleton will honor the career of Carl Weiner, the W. H. Laird Professor of History and the Liberal Arts, with a “Conference on Revolutionary Aftermaths” held Oct. 10-11 at the College. A number of conference events are free and open to the public.

Architect Edward Sövik to Lecture
2 October 2003Award-winning architect Edward Sövik, professor emeritus of art at St. Olaf College, will present a lecture titled “Silent Songs” at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at Carleton’s Boliou Hall, Room 161. The lecture, sponsored by Carleton’s art and art history department, is free and open to the public.

2 October 2003Minnesota Representatives Ray Cox and House Higher Education Finance Committee Chairman Doug Stang visited Carleton on Wednesday, Oct. 8 to discuss the importance of the Minnesota State Grant Program.
