Carleton Hosts Girl Scouts for Math and Science Activities
26 January 2004Nearly 100 scouts attended Carleton’s annual Girl Scout Math and Science Day, held in Hulings Hall on Saturday, Jan. 24. The scouts participated in eight math and science activities ranging from launching water rockets to dissecting a cow heart. Each scout earned a science badge for her participation. The event was organized by students in Carleton’s Women in Math and Science (WhIMS) group.

26 January 2004Richard Keiser, associate professor of political science, was quoted in a January 26 St. Paul Legal Ledger article titled “Stadium issue may be up at bat again.” Addressing Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s role in the matter, Keiser said, “He’s risking the animosity of the various grassroots groups that oppose [public funding for stadiums]. They probably didn’t give him any support in the first place.” The article also ran in Finance and Commerce.

Potter Richard Bresnahan to Give Talk on Tea Ceremonies
26 January 2004Richard Bresnahan, a potter and artist in residence at St. John’s University, will give a talk titled “The Tea Ceremony: Foundation for a 21st Century Environmental Movement” at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Carleton’s Gould Library Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public. Bresnahan’s work will be on display in Gould Library Athenaeum through Wednesday, March 10.

Norman Vig (political science) publishes op/ed piece in Star Tribune.
25 January 2004An opinion piece by Norman Vig, the Winifred and Atherton Bean Professor Emeritus of Science, Technology, and Society titled “Bush and the Red Planet” appeared on the front page of the January 25 op/ed section of the Star Tribune. In the article, Vig focused on the importance of putting resources into environmental, rather than space, programs.

25 January 2004Carleton’s involvement with a Northfield wind energy project was featured in a January 25 Star Tribune article titled “Northfield, MN: Turbine could generate cash for school.” Richard Strong, director of facilities, commented on student support for a separate but related turbine project at Carleton.

Students Explore Vocation at Alternative Career Fair
24 January 2004“Off the Beaten Path: Exploring Alternative Vocation,” a student-organized alternative career fair, was held on campus on Saturday. Guest speakers, including activists, artists and agriculturalists who have found ways to craft their passions into careers, encouraged proactivity and invited students to consider nontraditional post-college paths.

23 January 2004Elizabeth Parke ’03 was mentioned in a January 23 Burlington (Vt.) Free Press article titled “Cats loaded for another title shot,” about the University of Vermont Nordic Ski team. An art history major at Carleton, Parke is working on a master’s degree in history at the University of Vermont.

‘Chili Night’ Provides Safe Place for Serious Discussions
23 January 2004Chili Nights, organized twice a month by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, provide Carleton students with a safe atmosphere to discuss issues related to race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality.

Chris Kratt, co-creator, writer and star of acclaimed educational PBS children’s television shows and a 1992 Carleton graduate, will present a convocation address at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 in Carleton College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

22 January 2004Nelson Christensen, associate professor of physics, and Carl Ebeling ’03 are among the co-authors of a paper titled “Detector description and performance for the first coincidence observations between LIGO and GEO” published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research.
