Students Make Their Voices Heard
26 February 2004Carleton students, though busy studying as the term winds down, find time to get involved at Raise Your Voice, coordinated by the ACT office. At the annual event, students have the opportunity to write e-mails and letters to legislators, make phone calls to corporations and hear presentations from advocacy groups on campus.

‘Manifesta’ Authors to Speak at Women’s History Month Event
25 February 2004Jennifer Baumgardner and Amy Richards, co-authors of “Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future,” will give the Women’s History Month address at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 in Carleton College’s Severance Great Hall. A book-signing will follow the talk. Both events, sponsored by the Carleton Gender and Sexuality Center, and are free and open to the public.

25 February 2004Philip Camill, assistant professor of biology, gave an invited lecture at the University of Minnesota on how climate change will impact permafrost and land cover dynamics in subarctic regions of Canada.

25 February 2004Kathleen Galotti, professor of psychology and cognitive studies, served on the winter Cognition and Perception Grant Review Study Section for the National Institutes of Health.

Tou Ger Xiong ’96 featured in Chicago Tribune.
25 February 2004Tou Ger Xiong ’96 was featured in a February 25 Chicago Tribune article titled “Finding comedy in tragedy” about his career as the only Hmong comedian in America. In his act, he includes his experiences facing the Vietnam War and the retreat of American troops. Xiong’s career also was featured in a February 19 article in the Steven’s Point (Wisc.) Journal titled “Hmong rapper teaches diversity through laughter.” Xiong majored in political science at Carleton.

Carleton Hosts Girl Scouts for ‘Thinking Day’
24 February 2004More than 80 Girl Scouts from southern Minnesota attended Girl Scout Thinking Day at Carleton last Saturday. An event aimed at teaching Girl Scouts about life around the world, Carleton’s Thinking Day promoted awareness of global environmental and political issues.

President Robert Oden Performs with VocalEssence
24 February 2004President Robert A. Oden Jr. performed with the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers last Sunday, narrating a a humorous suite of music conceived by Garrison Keillor that tells the roller-coaster story of a rebellious church choir that hits the “big time” and abandons the church basement for the rock star lifestyle.

Intellectual Property Attorney Lawrence Lessig to Speak
23 February 2004Lawrence Lessig, a leading legal mind in the arena of intellectual property, will present a convocation titled “Rebuilding the Creative Commons” at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 in Carleton’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
