Carleton’s home of Northfield, Minnesota was featured in a Midwest Living piece titled, “Take a Day Trip To This Historic Minnesota Town for College-Town Spirit, a World-Famous Coffee Shop, and Fun Local Boutiques.”
For many Midwest families, a road trip to Northfield, Minnesota, is a high school rite of passage. Just 45 minutes south of Minneapolis, the town of roughly 20,000 is home to two liberal arts colleges, Carleton and St. Olaf—a campus tour doubleheader.
Stroll around Carleton College, with its striking English Gothic chapel and idyllic main green (cue the Frisbees). The school’s Cowling Arboretum spans 800 acres of prairie and woodland and stays open until 10 p.m. (It’s a popular spot for professors to hold classes or students to run, study, or ski in winter.) There’s also a small campus Japanese garden, Jōryō-en, where autumn maples glow against an evergreen backdrop.
