Meredith McCoy urges support for K-12 Native history lessons in Hechinger Report op-ed
McCoy is assistant professor of American studies and history at Carleton.
Meredith McCoy, assistant professor of American studies and history, published an op-ed in The Hechinger Report on Nov. 24 titled “We must support the teachers who will be in charge of expanding Native history lessons.” In her opinion piece, she writes that new laws mandating the teaching of Native American history—while a step in the right direction to make sure that students see the history and contemporary experiences of Native people as nuanced, relevant and impactful—won’t help unless teachers are supported and fully prepared to accurately and honestly reflect the full history of the United States.
