Matt Whited, chair and professor of chemistry, published an article in the Journal of the American Chemical Society titled, “Regulating Access to Active Sites via Hydrogen Bonding and Cation–Dipole Interactions: A Dual Cofactor Approach to Switchable Catalysis.” Whited’s work, a result of sabbatical collaboration at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, demonstrates that hydrogen bonding can be used as a “gate” for access to molecular catalysts, a mechanism long known for biological systems.
