Maori Artist Alex Nathan to Discuss Artwork

Alex Nathan, a Maori artist, will discuss his artwork at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 12 in Boliou Hall, Room 104, at Carleton College. The event is free and open to the public.

Nathan is a silversmith from the north island of New Zealand who originally worked in bone, stone and as a carver. In 1991 he took part in a workshop organized by Te Waka Toi, the Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand, and led by American Hopi silversmith/artist Michael Kabotie. Today, the majority of his work is in sterling silver. Nathan now produces fine, intricate pieces of silver jewelry that reflect his traditional beginnings. Pieces are constructed from sheet and wire using piercing and overlay techniques and are hand carved.

Professor of Art Fred Hagstrom and Carleton students in the studio art and biology off-campus study programs have visited Nathan’s Maori community annually over the last few years.
