Lutsky Recipient of the American Psychological Foundation’s Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award

Neil Lutsky, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, has been named as the 2011 recipient of the American Psychological Foundation’s Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award. This award recognizes “a significant career of contributions as an exceptional teacher of psychology.” Lutsky was nominated for this recognition by a group of his former students at Carleton and by colleagues in the psychology teaching community. “It’s satisfying to receive this honor but more humbling still to recognize how fortunate I have been to have taught such outstanding students and to have benefited from inspired and dedicated colleagues at Carleton and in the teaching of psychology community,” Lutsky said.

Northfield, Minn.—Neil Lutsky, Carleton College William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, has been named as the 2011 recipient of the American Psychological Foundation’s Charles L. Brewer Distinguished Teaching of Psychology Award.

This award recognizes “a significant career of contributions as an exceptional teacher of psychology.” Lutsky was nominated for this recognition by a group of his former students at Carleton and by colleagues in the psychology teaching community.

“It’s satisfying to receive this honor but more humbling still to recognize how fortunate I have been to have taught such outstanding students and to have benefited from inspired and dedicated colleagues at Carleton and in the teaching of psychology community,” Lutsky said.

Lutsky, who arrived at Carleton in 1974, is the first Minnesota recipient of the award, given annually since 2000. He earned his B.S. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from Harvard University, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow.  In 1998-99 he served as national president of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, Division Two of the American Psychological Association. In 2001, he received the Walter Mink Undergraduate Teacher Award given by the Minnesota Psychological Association. His publications and talks address social psychology, personality, the teaching of psychology, and quantitative reasoning in undergraduate education. His work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.  Lutsky is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Association of Psychological Science and served on the Board of Directors of the National Numeracy Network.

The awardee receives a plaque, $2,000, and an all-expense paid trip to the American Psychological Association annual convention, where the award is presented and where the winner is invited to give a special address.
