Lachelle Cunningham writes for Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder about Juneteenth at Carleton
Cunningham hosted multiple parts of the College’s Juneteenth programming during this year’s Reunion.
In her Juneteenth column for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, food columnist and chef Lachelle Cunningham “traces the line from her great-grandmother’s fried green tomatoes in South Minneapolis to a keynote at Carleton College, a step back at Soul of the Southside and a long-overdue claiming of her voice as a writer, healer and social justice thought leader, with recipes for fried green tomatoes and three potlikker mocktails.”
Carleton College asked me to curate the meal and recipes for their annual alumni reunion, which fell on June 19, recognized as Juneteenth. Not only did they ask me to plan the menu, but they also asked me to give the keynote. I showed up with my singing bowls, my spoken word, and a PowerPoint bearing the story of my people.
