Juliane Schicker, assistant professor of German, curated and introduced two films for the inaugural Twin Cities German Film Festival at the Main Cinema from Nov. 3-6. Hosted by the Germanic-American Institute in Saint Paul, the four-day event was produced with support from the Goethe-Institute Chicago and the DEFA Film Library. The inaugural theme, “Reel Women,” highlighted German films with women who use their passions and skills to instigate change in their own lives and in the lives of those around them. The program included two DEFA films—Solo Sunny (1979, dir. Konrad Wolf) and Our Short Life (1980, Lothar Warneke)—which Schicker contextualized for the audience in her introduction.

Later in November, Juliane will also host a Close-Up series on the DEFA Film Library’s Instagram account in which she presents her latest research topic: “Representations of Mothers and Children in GDR Media,” which will also include some DEFA films about strong women.
