Carleton College has announced that Jason B. Matz has been appointed to the newly created position of Chief Investment Analyst, effective May 3. Matz comes to Carleton from Jeffrey Slocum & Associates in Minneapolis, where he served as Director of Global Equity Research.

“Jason brings to this position a wealth of investment experience in both the public and private sectors,” said Robert A. Oden Jr., President of Carleton. “His chief roles will be to work with the College’s many individual investment managers, to identify new investment opportunities, to assess constantly the performance of various funds, and to assume some of the responsibilities now fulfilled by larger firms whose services the College has contracted.”

Carleton’s endowment currently stands at more than $500 million. A seven-member investment committee of Carleton trustees meets quarterly and has overall responsibility for the endowment. Matz will report to Carleton’s Vice President for Budget and Finance and work closely with the Board’s investment committee in providing full-time staff management of endowment assets.

“The Investment Committee has felt for some time that an endowment of Carleton’s size could benefit from having a full-time investment professional on staff,” said Committee Chair Wally Weitz, president of Wallace R. Weitz & Company in Omaha, Neb. “The difficult part was finding the person with the right combination of skills and energy level at the right time in their career. We believe we have found just the right person in Jason, and we are excited about working with him to take our investment capacity to a new level.”

“We think Jason is a great addition to the Investment Committee, and to Carleton,” added Committee member and former Chair Keith Libbey, an attorney with Fredrikson & Byron in Minneapolis.

Matz earned his B.S. in business administration from Boston University in 1994, and his M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management in 2001. Prior to his work with Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, Matz was a research assistant at Principal Capital Management in Des Moines, Iowa, and an investment analyst with the Minnesota State Board of Investment. His Carleton office will be based in the Twin Cities.

“Our endowment represents a significant financial resource which allows us to provide as fine an education as the College offers,” Oden noted. “I am delighted that we will be able to oversee this resource with increasing care.”
