Jacob Lew ’76 to Speak

Jacob Lew, a member of Carleton’s class of 1976, will present a convocation address titled “Why Budgets Matter: Choosing Between Guns vs. Butter and the Present vs. the Future,” at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 in Carleton College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

As director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1998 to 2001, Lew had lead responsibility for Clinton Administration policies on budget, management and appropriations issues. As a member of the Cabinet and senior member of the economic team, he advised the President on a broad range of domestic and international policies. Lew also represented the Administration in budge negotiations with Congress and served as a member of the National Security Council.

Prior to becoming director, Lew served as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget and Special Assistant to the President. In this latter role, he helped design and launch Americorps, the national service program, and worked on health care reform.

Before joining the Clinton Administration, Lew was the executive director of the Center for Middle East Research. He was also a partner in the law firm of VanNess, Feldman and Curtis, where he served as an attorney in private practice for five years.

Lew graduated from Harvard College in 1978, and earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1983. He is married and has two children.
