Former Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jorge Castañeda to deliver Carleton convocation

In his presentation, he will discuss the United States’ changing place in the world and U.S.-Mexican relations.

Jorge Castañeda, a politician, academic and former Mexican secretary of foreign affairs, will deliver Carleton College’s convocation address on Friday, April 29, from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in Skinner Chapel. In his presentation, he will discuss the United States’ changing place in the world and U.S.-Mexican relations.

Castañeda served as secretary of foreign affairs for Mexico from 2000 to 2003 under President Vicente Fox. Since leaving the post, he has worked as a professor at several universities, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico; the University of California, Berkeley; Princeton University; New York University and the University of Cambridge. He is an expert on Mexican and Latin American politics, U.S.-Mexican relations and comparative politics. 

Castañeda is the author of more than 20 books and a regular contributor to several prominent news outlets. His latest book, “America Through Foreign Eyes” (2020), assesses the United States’ changing role in the international sphere from a non-American perspective. Castañeda is also a regular commentator on CNN and an occasional writer of guest essays for The New York Times.

Castañeda received his A.B. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from the University of Paris (Panthéon-La Sorbonne).
