First single from The Counterfactuals’ debut album selected as The Current’s “Song of the Day”
Only two days after the digital release of their debut album, “Minimally Decent People,” Carleton and St. Olaf College “prof rockers” The Counterfactuals are pleased to announce that the first single from the album has been selected as the “Song of the Day” by national music tastemakers Minnesota Public Radio’s 89.3 The Current.

The station explains, “Music lovers from 89.3 The Current comb through mountains of music to choose the best new, independent, and unreleased songs to share with [listeners] each weekday.” The song is then available as a free download for an entire week. The Current has selected The Counterfactuals’ “If you go then you go it alone” as their “Song of the Day” for Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.
Additionally, respected music blog The Daily Album, known for “recommending one good album every day,” selected “Minimally Decent People” for its daily review on Dec. 11, 2013, the day after the album’s digital release, saying “If anyone can make intelligent indie rock, it should be these guys. And with Minimally Decent People, they prove that they are ready, willing, and able.”
Comprised of four college professors, The Counterfactuals are certainly not the “typical” indie rock band. Based in Northfield, home to two of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, the group includes assistant professors of philosophy Daniel Groll (lead vocal and guitar) and Jason Decker (guitar) and assistant professor of music Andy Flory (bass) from Carleton College, and Mike Fuerstein (drums), an assistant professor of philosophy from nearby St. Olaf College.
Music lovers—and students—agree: The Counterfactuals shine on stage and in the classroom. The band balances their popular performances with regular bouts of paper-grading and stints on the academic speaking circuit (Flory recently lectured at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame). On nights before papers are due, students can often be spotted in the audience tapping their toes to the music while typing away on their laptop computers.
The Counterfactuals will host a hometown album release party on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2014, at J. Grundy’s Rueb-N-Stein’s Upstairs Rueb in Northfield (503 Division Street). “Minimally Decent People” can be found at www.thecounterfactuals.bandcamp.com and on CD Baby.
