Cyber security expert and Carleton alumnus Tom Brown to deliver April 12 convocation

Cyber security expert and former prosecutor Tom Brown, Carleton Class of 1991, will deliver the college’s weekly convocation address on Friday, April 12, from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. In his presentation, titled, “Cutting-Edge Solutions to Address Complex Cyber Threats,” Brown will discuss his experience prosecuting high-profile  cases of cyber crime and offer solutions to address cyber threats.

Brown is managing director and global leader  of Berkeley Research Group’s Cyber Security/Investigations practice. His focus is on helping clients manage cyber risk, investigate and respond to cyber incidents, and address post-incident inquiries and litigation. Prior to joining Berkeley Research Group, Brown served for 12  years as an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, where he supervised the Complex Frauds and Cyber Crime Unit.

During his tenure in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Brown helped define a tough new approach for fighting cyber crime in the United States and abroad, handling some of the most technologically challenging cases ever pursued by the U.S. government. This includes prosecutions of Silk Road, an underground drug website that was worth over $1.2 billion; “hacktivist” groups such as Anonymous and LulzSec; the hacks of NASDAQ and Citibank; and the botnet Rove Digital, which infected more than 4 million computers.

Brown has conducted 10 jury trials and argued a number of appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, winning favorable judicial opinions that have had national impact on cyber-related issues. He has also led investigations of economic espionage, money laundering, securities fraud, identity theft and tax fraud. He is a recipient of the FBI Director’s Award for Outstanding Cyber Investigation and was named Prosecutor of the Year by the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation in 2011.

Brown received his BA in history from Carleton College and his JD from the University of Minnesota Law School. He is a member of the New York Bar.
