Carleton faculty flutist Martha Jamsa will perform with musical friends in a program of Bach, Villa-Lobos, Rutter, and Liebermann on Saturday, May 16 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Jamsa will be joined by faculty Mark Krusemeyer on recorder and Janean Hall on harpsichord, and guest artist Karen Madsen on cello. The group will perform the Trio Sonate BWV 1039 by J.S. Bach, a beloved masterpiece of the traditional repertoire. Guest artist, Marta Troicki, a Polish-American bassoonist will play in the virtuosic duo Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6. The piece is Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’ innovative attempt to blur the boundaries between classical Bach and Brazilian folk idiom inspirations.

In addition to those pieces, contemporary English traditionalist John Rutter’s beautiful Suite Antique for flute and harpsichord will be contrasted with American Lowell Liebermann’s more experimental Eight Pieces for Solo C-Flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute and/or Piccolo. The latter work is an extremely demanding and imaginative piece in which Jamsa will play the varied instruments of the flute family.
