Chloé Fandel receives NCKRI funding to study karst aquifers

Chloé Fandel, assistant professor of geology, has received a grant from the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) in support of her project, titled “Developing open-source tools to simulate reactive and non-reactive contaminant transport in karst aquifers.” The NCKRI is supported by the National Parks Service and is housed and managed on their behalf at New Mexico Tech. This support will enable Fandel to hire two student researchers to join her in her work developing open-source, well-documented and reproducible code for numerical flow and transport modeling in karst aquifers, using the varied karst landscape of southeastern Minnesota as a testing ground, linking existing but disconnected models of conduit network structure, groundwater flow and contaminant transport.
