Chérif Keïta, William H. Laird Professor of French and the Liberal Arts, gave a speech remotely on September 14 during the 2023 John L. Dube Annual Lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This year’s lecture celebrated the 150th anniversary of Nokutela Mdima Dube, the previously forgotten hero of South African liberation history, whose unmarked grave Keïta found in Johannesburg in 2011 in collaboration with the City Parks and Cemeteries Department. Keïta made a documentary film honoring the historical figure titled, “uKukhumbula uNokutela/Remembering Nokutela” (2014).
