Celia Silverstein ’26, an English major with minors in creative writing and music performance, was awarded third place in the upper collegiate musical theater category at Minnesota’s National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) competition, held November 1-2 at Bethel University. Fourteen upper level collegiate singers from across the state competed, each preparing four contrasting songs from the musical theater canon, with Silverstein advancing to both the semi-finals and then the final round after two days of performances. She was accompanied by collaborative pianist Doug Rohde.
“I had a fantastic experience,” Silverstein said. “It reminded me of how much I love to perform. I am so grateful I’m able to study voice seriously while also focusing hard on academics and athletics at Carleton. I have learned so much from my voice lessons, and I can’t wait to continue to grow as a singer and a performer.”
At Carleton, Silverstein studies voice with Melissa Holm-Johansen, instructor in voice; sings in Carleton Voices with Matthew Olson, director of choral activities and lecturer in music and voice; and is a member of the Women’s Varsity Cross-Country and Track & Field teams.
