Carleton has received a $10,000 grant from the Xcel Energy Foundation to fund its “Natural Science in Natural Lands: Improving the Carleton Arboretum” project. The grant will fund the College’s new project, which will heighten the educational and recreational value of the Cowling Arboretum. The grant will help provide training for Arboretum staff on state-of-the-art restoration methods, will increase opportunities to participate in restoration activities for everyone on campus and in Northfield, and provide new signs to help visitors enjoy the Arboretum.

Robert Lamppa, Carleton College Director of Energy Management and Senior Project Manager, will speak about his recent experience at the University of Oslo in Norway, studying energy planning and sustainable development, on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. in the Gould Library Athenaeum. This event is free and open to the public.

Economist Gary Yohe, lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will present a lecture entitled “Stories from the Climate Wars: Insights and Lessons from the IPCC” on Monday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Boliou Hall Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public.

Carleton College’s Climate Change Lecture Series Continues
1 February 2008A lecture series at Carleton College focused on climate change continues with the appearance of Heidi Welsh, a research analyst for the New York City-based firm RiskMetrics Group. A 1988 graduate of Carleton, Welsh’s lecture is entitled “Global Warming and Corporate Responsibility” and will take place Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin Hall, room 141. The appearance is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

Carleton College to Participate in “Focus The Nation,” A National Climate Change Teach-In
25 January 2008Carleton College will participate in “Focus The Nation,” a massive nationwide teach-in taking place Wednesday, Jan. 30 and Thursday, Jan. 31, with the goal of engaging both the Carleton and greater Northfield communities with millions of other students, citizens, political leaders and decision makers to raise awareness on the national stage about the issue of global warming. The College’s “Focus The Nation” events are free and open to the public.

Columbia University Professor to Kick-Off Climate Change Lecture Series at Carleton College
14 September 2007Columbia University professor Wallace Broecker will give a lecture entitled “How to Terminate a Glacier Period” on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Boliou Hall room 104 of the Carleton College campus. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Carleton buildings mentioned in Architecture Minnesota
1 February 2003Carleton was mentioned in two articles in the January/February issue of Architecture Minnesota. In the first, titled “The Sustainable Quest,” Richard Strong, director of facilities management and planning, commented on how sustainable architectural designs are incorporated into new buildings on Carleton’s campus. Bardwell Smith, the John W. Nason Professor Emeritus of Religion and Asian Studies, was quoted in the second article, “Downtown Commercial District,” which discussed the fate of Northfield’s small town character as the suburbs encroach on it.
