    Kirk Campbell, director of maintenance and custodial services, gave several presentations at the recent Minnesota Midwest Operations Seminar and Trade Show. Campbell spoke on labor saving ideas to facilities professionals in health care and education.

  • Julie Neiworth (psychology) and students present findings

    Julie Neiworth, professor of psychology, Cara Sylvester ’03 and Janice Hassett ’03 gave a presentation titled “Is socially-mediated sharing ape-specific? The effects of cooperation and of a food prime on food sharing in cotton top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus)” at the Midwestern Psychological Association Meeting. Co-authors include Cassandra McMillan ’03, Melinda Jensen ’03 and Ben Basile ’02. Neiworth, Hassett and Sylvester also gave a presentation titled “Face processing by tamarins and humans: Evidence of conspecific and experiential effects” at the Midwestern Psychological Association meeting.

  • Mija Van Der Wege (psychology) publishes article.

    12 May 2003

    Mija Van Der Wege, assistant professor of psychology, published an article titled “The effects of information scent on visual search in the hyperbolic tree browser” in ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction. Van Der Wege also gave two presentations at the Psychonomic Society annual meeting titled “Grounding through using pointing and placing gestures” (co-authored with Herbert H. Clark and Anna Katz) and “Grounding multiple tasks in different communication media.”

  • Jason Lord ’06 presents prize-winning paper at Twin Cities conference.

    Jason Lord ’06 presented a paper on direct foreign investment in Russia at the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities Russian and Eastern European Studies Conference. Lord was awarded first place in the student research paper competition. Lord is majoring in studio art and economics at Carleton.

  • Qiguang Zhao (Chinese) appears on Chinese television.

    8 May 2003

    Qiguang Zhao, the Burton and Lily Levin Professor of Chinese, appeared on Chinese national television channels CCTV-2 and CCTV-9 (the English channel) discussing American culture and the war in Iraq. He also worked with the Chinese national channel CCTV-4 on a comparative culture program which will air in the near future.

  • Cathy Yandell (French) publishes two pieces.

    Cathy Yandell, the W.I. and Hulda F. Daniell Professor of French Literature, Language and Culture has published “‘L’amour au féminin?’ Ronsard and Pontus de Tyard Writing as Women” in Pierre de Ronsard: figure de la variété and “Louise Labé’s Transgressions” in High Anxiety: Masculinity in Crisis in Early Modern France.

  • Eleanor Courtemanche (English) presents on Zola.

    Eleanor Courtemanche, visiting assistant professor of English, gave a paper titled ” ‘A rage of unsated desire’: Economic Hysteria and Narrative Pleasure in Zola’s ‘The Ladies’ Paradise’ ” at the Nineteenth Century Studies Association conference.

    “Lush Life”, an exhibit of artwork by Fred Hagstrom, professor of art, is currently at the Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis.

  • Parna Sengupta (history) selected as NAE Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow.

    Parna Sengupta, assistant professor of history, was selected as a 2003 National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellow. The fellowship was established to encourage outstanding researchers at the postdoctoral level to pursue critical education research projects, and provides $50,000 for release time from teaching and other costs associated with research.

    Sam Demas, college librarian and senior lecturer, gave a keynote talk titled “The Evolving Roles of Library Buildings” at the annual meeting of the Association of College Libraries of Pennsylvania.
