Studio art majors presented their comprehensive exercise work in an exhibition in the Perlman Teaching Museum in the Weitz Center for Creativity. The show celebrated 19 students’ works created in sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, metals, photography, and installation.

Carleton’s premier theater and dance groups, the Players and the Semaphore Repertory Dance Company collaborated to create a new adaptation of Aeschylus’ trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies.

As the end of the term approaches, the concert hall rings with music as a variety of ensembles perform their work. Here is a glance at some of the concerts from this week.

Carleton’s ever-popular Ebony II dance performance was staged in West Gym to sold-out crowds in April.

The male dance troupe Halau Kiawekupono O Ka Ua presented an evening of authentic traditional Hula dance and music in the Carleton College Weitz Center for Creativity.

Carleton’s Semaphore Repertory Dance Company has been honored by a national panel of adjudicators by being selected to perform in the Gala Concert at the Central Regional American College Dance Festival in Washington, D.C.

Held May 25-27, American College Dance Festival Association’s 2012 National College Dance Festival presents three concerts featuring some of the finest dance works selected from colleges and universities throughout the country. Each concert showcases approximately ten dances, with a total of thirty schools participating in the Festival galas.  

As part of Carleton’s spring term exhibit, “Our Treasures: Highlights from the Minnesota Museum of American Art,” the College sponsored a reception and community open house that included a presentation by the exhibit curator along with a special Family Day at the Weitz Center, featuring hands-on art projects, including a museum treasure hunt and tours.

While it’s been a mild winter in Minnesota during Winter Term 2012, these past few weeks of the term have been bustling with a wide variety of student activities, ranging from the play performance “Farragut North” to an indoor carnival and the traditional Midwinter Ball.

“Farragut North,” loosely based on Howard Dean’s 2004 Democratic primary campaign, opened this past weekend at the Weitz Center for Creativity. Directed by associate professor of theater David Wiles, the play is billed as “a classic tale of hubris set against a contemporary landscape—about the lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it.” Presented by the Carleton Players, a video trailer of the production is available. Tickets for the performance, which continues February 24-25, are available online.

The Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) performed at Carleton on Friday, Jan. 6, kicking off the winter term programming in the Weitz Center for Creativity. Dan McAlister ’13 interviewed Stuart Pimsler, who also talked about the collaborative class he taught at Carleton during the winter term, which brought politics and dance together in a unique but interesting cross-disciplinary way, and showed footage of the company’s performance in the Weitz Center Theater. The performance was supported by funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Legacy Amendment.
