Robert Woolsey ’70, was featured as a “Person of the Day” by the Vancouver Business Journal on May 9. Woolsey was recently named vice president of Columbia Credit Union’s business banking department. A recent survey by Goldman Sachs named Columbia as one of the top 25 credit unions nationwide in terms of business loan assets. Woolsey majored in government at Carleton.

D. Scott Harrison ’65 was featured in a Cook County News-Herald story on May 8 titled “Governor appoints Scott Harrison to lake protection fund board.” Harrison, owner of Lutsen Resort, is the newest member appointed by the Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty to the Great Lakes Protection Fund board of directors. “It’s an honor, particularly since I live on the water. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t look out there and think about its future,” Harrison said. Harrison majored in government at Carleton.

Even Pay ’05 was interviewed for a story titled “Rapid City student gets first-hand glimpse of SARS outbreak” that appeared in the May 6 Rapid City (S.D.) Journal and the May 7 Aberdeen (S.D.) American News. Pay was one of 35 students on a Beijing off-campus study program that returned to campus early because of the threat of SARS. “We believed the [Chinese] government’s numbers. We didn’t perceive a threat,” Pay said regarding the decision to go ahead with the program. Pay is a political science/IR major.

Molly Bruder ’03 was mentioned in a May 6 Newsday.com article about this year’s Watson Fellowship recipients. The article highlighted Bruder as one of 65 winners of the 2003 Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. The award will fund Bruder’s study of appliqué in four countries over the next year. Bruder is a political science major.

Sarah Rechtzigel, secretary to the associate deans of students, was featured in a May 3 Star Tribune article titled “Confined, but not exactly isolated” about Carleton students quarantined because of SARS fears. Rechtzigel commented about bringing food to the students. Also quoted were Mark Govoni, dean of students and Carleton students Abby Taplin ’04 and Emily Kuross ’05. Taplin is a philosophy major and Kuross is a biology major.

William “Bill” D. Dunlap ’60 was featured in the Star Tribune on May 3 upon his retirement as chairman of Campbell Mithun, the largest advertising agency in the Twin Cities. The article featured highlights of Dunlap’s career, including his stint as assistant postmaster general, during which he stowed a portable post office on an Apollo space flight so astronauts could create postmarks from “The Moon.” Dunlap majored in government at Carleton.

A Pioneer Press article titled “Student is state’s 8th suspected SARS case” ran on May 1. The story gave details of the treatment and release of an unidentified Carleton student who had just returned from the College’s Beijing program. “He’s not very ill and he’s been discharged,” said a Minnesota Department of Health spokesperson. The student will remain in quarantine for 10 days after his symptoms subside.

Abby Weeks ’05 was interviewed for an April 22 article in the Bangor (Maine) Daily News titled “Readers who stitch and tell” about area residents who enjoy sewing, needlework and similar pursuits. Weeks, who crochets, reported that many students at Carleton, male and female, have taken up knitting. “We refer to it as ‘constructive fidgeting’,” she said. “Everyone teaches everyone else.” Weeks is a mathematics major at Carleton.

Jenny Wahl, professor of economics, was quoted in an April 21 Star Tribune article titled “What price victory?” Wahl commented on the possible outcomes of U.S. economic aid decisions toward Iraq. Wahl is a member of the Star Tribune Board of Economists.

David Waterbury, chief maintenance plumber, and his wife, Molly, were featured in an April 20 Morrison County (Minn.) Record article titled ” ‘On the Weekend’ opens for business in Pierz.” The Waterburys opened a retail store featuring gifts, antiques and garden accessories. Waterbury did the renovations himself. The shop is located in the Little Falls, Minn., area and the name reflects the days the shop is open, Thursday through Sunday.
