14 February 2004Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a February 14 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article titled “Pawlenty’s trip to Iraq: Bush queries governors about life and attitudes in Baghdad.” Schier comments that the trip was mostly a public relations maneuver. “The administration is trying to get around national press coverage and present a more favorable view of the Iraq situation,” Schier said.

12 February 2004Jason Richardson ’02 was featured in a February 12 The Hill article titled “Richardson follows in mother’s steps ” about his experiences working as the legislative correspondent for Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.). Richardson graduated from Carleton a term early to work on his mother Betty’s compaign in Idaho for Congress. “Democracy is not a spectator sport,” Richardson said. Richardson majored in political science at Carleton.

8 February 2004Toni Carter ’75 was featured in a February 8 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article titled “New St. Paul school chairwoman: A voice of experience,” about her efforts to improve her district despite million dollar deficits. “Education is the platform for success,” Carter said. Carter majored in French at Carleton.

6 February 2004Myra Silva ’01 was featured in a Febrary 6 Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal article titled “Sandpaper-collage maker is up to scratch” about her career as an furniture-maker and artist. Her work, including sandpaper collages, will be showing at the Zephyr Gallery in early February. Silva’s work is also featured on her Web site at www.myrasilva.com/. Silva majored in studio art at Carleton.

4 February 2004Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a Februrary 4 Associated Press Washington Bureau article titled “Coleman raises more than $300,000 for leadership PAC,” about Minnesota senator Norm Coleman’s success in fundraising for a political action committee to support other Republican candidates. “Having money in a leadership PAC is an important source of influence in the Senate,” Schier said.

Joe Nathan ’70 writes in Phi Delta Kappan
1 February 2004Joe Nathan ’70 wrote an article in the February 1 issue of Phi Delta Kappan titled “A Response to Frederick Hess: Some Questions for Advocates of Public Education.” The article discussed the principles under which public schools should operate and advocated charter schools. “The opportunity to try new approaches is as vital for education as it is for medicine, business, or technology,” said Nathan. He was a government major at Carleton.

Congdon professor of Political Science, was quoted in a January 31 Associated Press Wire article titled “Legislature ’04: Plenty of polarizing issues in play” about the Minnesota legislature. Schier commented that despite a packed agenda he thinks “the chances for a shorter session are greater because this governor wants to deal.”

29 January 2004Bryn Perkins ’95 was featured in a January 29 Prague (Czech Republic) Post article titled “All the news that’s fit to link,” about starting the Prague Monitor, a Web site that provides links to Czech related news articles. Since 1998, Perkins has lived in Prague where he also started a bookstore called Shakespeare and Sons. Perkins was a geology major at Carleton.

28 January 2004Barrie Osborne ’66 was mentioned in two January 28 Saint Paul Pioneer Press articles. One, titled “Carleton grad hopes third time is Oscar charm” featured Osborne’s comments on his investment in buying a tuxedo when the first Lord of the Rings movie debuted. The second article, titled “Oscars may be hobbit forming” featured Osborne’s work as executive producer of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Osborne was a sociology major at Carleton.
