Robin Theobald ’73 featured as Summit Old Timer
12 February 2005Robin Theobald ’73 was featured in a February 12 Summit (Colo.) Daily News articled titled “Summit Old Timer”. The article highlighted the many contribution Robin and his wife, Patty, have made to the Breckinridge, Colo. area. In addition to mining and real estate ventures, the couple started the first radio station in the area (now KSMT). They now manage propoerties and preserve historical buildings in the area. Theobald majored in English literature at Carleton.

Carleton featured in University Business cover story.
9 February 2005Carleton’s wind turbine was featured as the lead in the University Business February issue cover story, titled “Green Expectations.” The article featured environmental efforts at a number of colleges across the nation, including Carleton.

Steven Schier (political science) quoted in Knight Ridder
8 February 2005Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon professor of Political Science, was quoted in a February 8 Knight Ridder Washington Bureau article titled “Budget deficits threaten political will to tackle other Bush initiatives.” The article explored the difficulties Bush will have passing Social Security reform while the budget deficit is at a record high. “With federal spending out of whack, restructuring Social Security, the biggest spending program, becomes riskier and becomes a tougher sell,” said Schier. The story was picked up by several newspapers across the country.

31 January 2005Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a January 31 U.S. News & World Report article titled “Ambitious Crusader,” a portrait of Minnesota Senator Norman Coleman. “He’s very ambitious…I think this is a fellow who wants to run for the highest office you can find, and he’s not going to stop,” said Schier.

Seniors Katie and Beth Freeman Featured in Star Tribune
30 January 2005Star Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse featured Carleton’s Beth and Katie Freeman in his Sunday column on January 30. Reusse wrote: “On Saturday, the Freemans and their teammates did something great on their home court. They melded spectacularly in a motion offense that took apart St. Ben’s. Beth scored 10 points and Katie had six. As forwards, they combined for eight assists and took only 11 shots. Katie went 4-for-4 on free throws, keeping her over 80 percent for her career, according to doting father Mike. ‘When I say that, I mean over 80 percent going back to the second grade,’ he said. ‘I have the stats.’ For the full article, please visit the Star Tribune website. Charles “Chip” Lyons ’79 appears on NBC Today Show.
25 January 2005Charles “Chip” Lyons ’79, president of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, appeared on the January 25 NBC Today Show to discuss his recent trip to South Asian areas affected by the recent tsunamis. “The response from donors continues to be both extraordinary and heartwarming,” Lyons said in a recent UNICEF press release. “Our generous supporters are playing a vital role for UNICEF and for kids. Still, much more help is needed.” Lyons was a political science/IR major at Carleton.

Coach’s home exudes joy-filled chaos
23 January 2005Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, Carleton’s women’s basketball coach, was featured in a December 23, 2005, Star Tribune story by Patrick Reusse that centered around her growing family. Five of Metcalf-Filzen’s seven children were adopted internationally, the youngest two adopted just last summer from Ethiopia. The article also discussed the coach’s winning record at Carleton, where she has worked as women’s basketball coach since 1997.

Betsy Johnson ’73 featured in Salem Statesman Journal
21 January 2005Betsy Johnson ’73 was featured in a January 21 Salem (Ore.) Statesman Journal articled titled “Governor swears in new senator.” Johnson was appointed to the Oregon state senate by governor Ted Kulongoski. Johnson had been a state representative from Scappoose, Ore. since 2001, following in the footsteps of her father who had served seven terms as a state representative from Redmond. Johnson majored in history at Carleton.

21 January 2005Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a January 21 Washington Post article titled “An Ambitious President Advances His Idealism,” about U.S. President George W. Bush’s agenda for his second term. Schier commented that Bush’s inaugural address will be placed in better context when paired with the State of the Union address next month.

Judith (Richards) Spurgin ’58 quoted in Chicago Tribune
14 January 2005Judith (Richards) Spurgin ’58 was quoted in a January 14 Chicago Tribune article titled “Our guide to where mature singles mingle proves that older doesn’t mean alone.” Spurgin tells the story of how she met her future husband at the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s docent program while she was in her early fifties. “People there are very welcoming. The majority of them are in their 50s, 60s and older,” says Spurgin. Spurgin majored in English while at Carleton.
