President Oden in China
21 June 2006President Oden’s spring trip to China was covered in a lengthy article in the South China Morning Post (May 6, 2006). The article described the liberal arts college experience in the United States, and how some Chinese schools are imitating this model. It mentioned that Oden was in China to build new ties with local universities, and quoted him as saying how important international study and travel is to Carleton and its students.

Hubbell and Rain Forest Census
6 June 2006The rain forest census work of Stephen P. Hubbell ’63 is featured in a New York Times article (June 6, 2006). Hubbell, an ecologist at the University of Georgia, will be receiving an honorary degree from Carleton at this year’s commencement ceremonies. His research (along with partner Robin Foster of the Field Museum of Natural History) in an open-air laboratory in a Panama Canal island biological reserve has allowed him to measure geographical ranges and population fluctuations in tropical forests.

Sustainability at Carleton
6 June 2006Carleton’s efforts at sustainability were featured in a June 4, 2006, Associated Press article. The article led with mention of Carleton’s wind turbine as well as Carleton senior Daniel Pulver’s (Harpswell, Maine) attempts to turn used cooking oil into auto fuel. The piece, which ran in the Boston Globe and many other newspapers, used Carleton as an example of the increasing efforts by colleges nationwide to become more sustainable while also saving money.

Jack Sawyer’s University
15 May 2006Stephen R. Lewis Jr., President Emeritus of Carleton College, published an essay called “Cheers for ‘Jack Sawyer’s U’ ” in the May 12, 2006, issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. The essay remembers the late John E. Sawyer, former president of Williams College and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, who mentored a great number of people who went on to distinguished careers in higher education administration.

Matt Bartel Blog
8 May 2006Matt Bartel ’06 and his MNSpeak.com blog were featured in the [Minneapolis] Star Tribune‘s May 8, 2006, issue. Bartel, the son of publishers Tom Bartel ’73 and Kristin Henning ’75, has been owner of MNSpeak.com for just over a year. Bartel and Henning publish the Twin Cities magazine The Rake, and are former publishers of Twin Cities publications City Pages and Minnesota Parent.

Faisal Mohyuddin
27 April 2006Faisal Mohyuddin ’00, a high school English teacher in Highland Park, Ill., won the Raymond Bradbury Poetry Writing Contest sponsored by the Waukegan (lll.) Public Library, the Chicago Tribune reported on April 24, 2006. Mohyuddin, an English major at Carleton, was one of 118 entrants from around the world. His poem was inspired by his grandfather’s death in Pakistan shortly after World War II.

Jim Fisher on Talk of the Nation
27 April 2006Jim Fisher, professor of anthropology at Carleton, was a guest on NPR’s Talk of the Nation program on April 26, 2006. Fisher, who also is president of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies and author of Living Martyrs: Individuals and Revolution in Nepal, was part of a program called “Exploring the Complex Politics of Nepal.” To listen to the show or order a transcript, go to www.npr.org.

Kirbyjon Caldwell
24 April 2006The Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell ’75, pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church–the largest United Methodist church in the nation–is on the cover of the May 2006 issue of Black Enterprise magazine. Caldwell, who gave the benediction at the first inauguration of President George W. Bush, is author of The Gospel of Good Success (Simon & Schuster).

Same sex marriage op-ed
20 April 2006Three Carleton College political science faculty members had an op-ed on same-sex marriage published in the Star Tribune on April 19, 2006. Professor Barbara Allen, assistant professor Kelly Kollman and visiting instructor Karen Wright described how most other Western democracies recognize the relationship rights of gay and lesbian couples. The three faculty members are working on a project examining the influence of federal processes on same-sex union laws in Canada, Europe and the United States.

Korean Adoptee Program
7 April 2006Carleton’s Korean Adoptee Program was featured in an article in Korean Quarterly magazine (Spring 2005). The article was reprinted from the College’s web site, and mentioned sophomore Joo Ree Richards and freshman Sung-Wook Hwang.
