Carleton welcomes most diverse, selective class in history
The incoming class of 534 students—of which 33% identify as people of color—was selected from a pool of 7,324 applicants.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019, Carleton welcomes the Class of 2023 as the most diverse and most selective class in the college’s history. The incoming class of 534 students—of which 33% identify as people of color—was selected from a pool of 7,324 applicants. First-generation college students make up 11% of the class.
The class brings both academic and extracurricular strengths to campus. Among them, 70% graduated high school in the top 10% of their class, 36 are National Merit Scholars and 13 are National Hispanic Recognition Scholars. Along with their academic commitments, 84% have given their time to community service, 60% played varsity athletics, 45% have a background in music, and 42% had a paying job in high school. They come to Carleton with open minds, as 40% are undecided on an academic major.
The class is also geographically diverse, with students coming from 45 states and 32 countries (11% are international residents). The state representing the most students is Minnesota (73), followed by California (48), Illinois (44), New York (28), Washington (28), Texas (25) Massachusetts (21) and Wisconsin (21).
The total amount of financial aid awarded to the Class of 2023 is $12.8 million, with an average individual need-based grant award of $43,688. The first day of classes for all Carleton students is Monday, Sept. 16.
