Carleton presents Music from the Middle East: An evening with Yair Dalal and Dror Sinai
The two musicians travel the globe with their message of encouraging world-wide peace as inspired by their musical collaborations.
Carleton College invites the public to a special performance by violinist and oud player Yair Dalal, along with percussionist Dror Sinai. Celebrating the music of the Middle East, the concert will take place Saturday, May 11, from 7-9 p.m. in the Kracum Performance Hall of the Weitz Center for Creativity. The two musicians travel the globe with their message of encouraging world-wide peace as inspired by their musical collaborations.
“Rhythm is all around us, in everything we see, we touch, we breathe,” Sinai said. “With rhythm, we shall achieve better communication and understanding among ourselves and all people; all people as one.” Dalal added, “Music strengthens the beauty that exists in the human soul.”
Dalal interweaves in his performance the traditions of Iraqi and Jewish Arab music, along with a range of other influences, from the Balkans to India. Dalal grew up in Israel, in a community of immigrants from Baghdad, and studied with the master Jewish Iraqi musicians who emigrated from Iraq to Israel in the 1950s. He is one of a handful of artists who preserve and sustain the Jewish-Iraqi musical heritage. Dalal has released 14 albums, covering wide and varied cultural territory, and authentically representing Israeli, Jewish and Middle Eastern cultures. An internationally-renowned performer and educator, Sinai is the founder of Rhythm Fusion, Inc., based in Santa Cruz, Calif. He is also a founding member of the World Music Committee for the Percussive Arts Society (www.pas.org) and, when not performing, travels the world teaching percussion and leading musical and cultural explorations designed to bring people together working towards peace.
