Carleton Paglia Fellows, Professor Justin London meet at Society for Music Perception and Cognition
London met up with Jed Villanueva ’22 and Brady Rivkin ’26 at the society’s biennial meeting.
There was a confluence of Carls at the mid-July biennial meeting of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC), held at Northwestern University!
Justin London — Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Music, Cognitive Science, and the Humanities at Carleton, and past president of SMPC — met up with Jed Villanueva ’22 and Brady Rivkin ’26, both of whom studied cognitive science and music at Carleton and received Paglia Post-Baccalaureate Fellowships after graduation.
Since 2024, Villanueva has been a PhD candidate in Professor Assal Habibi’s lab at the University of Southern California, following two years as a Paglia Fellow with Habibi. At the SMPC meeting, Villanueva presented a paper on “Response Time Variability and their Neural Correlates in Adolescent Musicians and Dancers,” based upon his recent work in musical development in children.
Rivkin has just begun his Paglia Fellowship. He will spend the next two years working at the SoundBrain Laboratory at Northwestern University, directed by Dr. Bharath Chandrasekaran. There, he will engage in research in the perception of speech-in-noise, a topic that was the focus of his senior comps project at Carleton.
