Carleton observes Holocaust Remembrance Day with service and presentation

Carleton College will observe Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Sunday, April 28, in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Following a vigil and service, a soup supper will be served. This event is free and open to the public.

The event begins at 4:15 p.m. with the traditional reading of the names of Holocaust victims, along with an opportunity to learn and sing songs in Yiddish. At 5 p.m. there will be a short service led by Carleton associate chaplain Rabbi Shosh Dworsky, followed by a presentation and conversation. Dinner follows at 6 p.m.

This year’s featured speaker is Twin Cities resident and Holocaust survivor Manny Gabler, who will share the story of his family’s flight from Nazi-occupied Germany in 1937. The family first fled to Italy and then to one of the only places accepting refugees at the time, Shanghai, where they lived until 1948. Some 18,000 Jews made the journey as well, living in what became known as the “Shanghai ghetto.” Gabler’s presentation will provide a rare glimpse into this most unusual and fascinating chapter in Jewish and Chinese history.
