Carleton President Stephen R. Lewis Jr. was named to the Williamsville South High School Wall of Fame.

Carleton College President Stephen R. Lewis, Jr., was named to the Williamsville South High School Wall of Fame at a brunch on Friday, Nov. 9. Seven other distinguished alumni, including author Joyce Carol Oates, also were honored. Lewis graduated from the school, located near Buffalo, N.Y., in 1956.

The Wall of Fame recognizes South High graduates for excellence in their chosen field, outstanding contributions to humanity and outstanding service to the community, profession or other cause.

Lewis has been president of Carleton since 1987, and will retire in June 2002. He is a specialist in development economics, and since 1975 has been an Economic Consultant to the Government of Botswana, which awarded him the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service in 1982.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College in 1960 and received his doctorate in economics from Stanford University in 1963. He joined the Williams faculty in 1966, served twice as Provost of Williams and was the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Economics from 1976 to 1987. He also taught economics at Stanford, Harvard and the University of Nairobi in Kenya, and is the author of five major books and dozens of articles. He holds the rank of Professor of Economics at Carleton, and occasionally teaches a course in African economic development.
