Northfield, Minn.––Stacy Beckwith, associate professor of Hebrew and chair of Middle Eastern Languages, recently chaired a panel discussion at the Modern Language Association (MLA) convention for the Hebrew Literature Discussion Group and the Arabic Literature Division.

As a member of the executive committee of the MLA’s Hebrew Literature Discussion Group, Beckwith chaired a panel titled, “Mediation and Mobility in the Western Mediterranean” at the MLA’s annual convention in Los Angeles on January 6-9, 2011. She organized the panel with Ibtissam Bouachrine, assistant professor of Spanish at Smith College (Mass.) and an executive committee member of the MLA’s Division of Arabic Literature. Beckwith’s paper for the panel was titled, “Unpegging the Oriental in Mediterranean Jewish Identities.”

“This opportunity is all the more exciting in light of the fact that Carleton has been expanding its curricular offerings on the Middle East,” Carleton Associate Dean of the College Éva Posfay said. She pointed to Carleton’s new tenure-track faculty positions in Arabic (held by Yaron Klein), religion and the Islamic world (Noah Salomon), and history and the African Diaspora in the Arab world (Thabiti Willis). In addition, she noted, Carleton has an adjunct instructor in Hebrew and Arabic (Shadi Bayadsy) and an ACLS New Faculty Fellow in Middle Eastern languages (Maureen Jackson) for 2010-2012. Carleton also created a new Department of Middle Eastern Languages in January 2010, and is exploring the region’s impact across academic departments through the Middle East Initiative, which is chaired by Beckwith.
