Activist Helen Forsythe to deliver Carleton convocation

In her presentation, she shares her philosophy of community organizing.

Helen Forsythe, a climate and sustainability activist, will deliver Carleton College’s weekly convocation address on Friday, Oct. 30, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. over Zoom. In her presentation, she will share the philosophy behind her work, her ideas about building up local communities, and her strategies in organizing for the longer-term without burning out.

Forsythe is an experienced activist and organizer based in Northfield, working on a variety of causes including fighting climate change; building a local, sustainable economy; and helping grow youth activism. She has led the charge to develop a green, sustainable economy in Northfield by founding the worker cooperative Northfield Curbside Composting, and is a board member of the community-owned Just Food Co-op.

She has also worked with the Young People’s Action Coalition, a youth-run multi-issue group based in Minneapolis organizing middle and high school students to take action on the issues that matter to them.

In addition to her work in the community, Forsythe serves as a local-performing musician who plays the banjo and sings folk and bluegrass music.
