14th Annual Empty Bowls Charitable Fundraiser

Carleton College’s Studio Art Department and Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) will host the 14th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Friday, May 11 on the campus Bald Spot beginning at 11:45 a.m., following the weekly convocation address. This popular event is open to the public. Carleton encourages all who are interested to attend and purchase a bowl, soup, and bread to support a great cause. 

Empty Bowls features over 600 bowls hand-crafted by Carleton students and other community members, as well as soup homemade by residents of Carleton interest houses. A suggested donation of $15 to $20 buys a serving of soup, the bowl it’s served in, and a side of bread. All proceeds go to the Northfield Community Action Center’s food shelf. The annual event has raised thousands of dollars for the food shelf over the years. 

Empty Bowls at Carleton is one of many such events held nationwide and in at least 14 other countries. The concept, now in its 28th year, was first developed by a teacher and his high school students in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan — conceived as a way to raise money for hunger relief organizations while providing donors with a tangible reminder of the problem of worldwide hunger.

The Bald Spot is located at the center of the Carleton College campus off College Street. This event will be moved to upper level of the Sayles Hill Campus Center in the event of rain.
