George Vrtis, professor of environmental studies and history, published an article co-authored with Donna Bilak of New York University, titled “Environmental Alchemy: Mercury-Gold Amalgamation Mining and the Transformation of the Earth,” in Ambix: The Journal of the Society for the History of Alchemy and Chemistry 70:1 (March 2023), 31-53. The article is part of a special issue of Ambix titled “Gold and Mercury: Amalgamated Histories in Chemistry, Culture, and Environment.” This research was supported by a grant from the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study and the Lorentz Center for Scientific Workshops at Leiden University, Netherlands.
