Serena Zabin, professor and chair of history, published “The midterms may be over, but we have other civic responsibilities” as part of The Washington Post’s Made by History series on Nov. 30.
She argues that taking a look back at how Americans in the years between the American Revolution and the Civil War viewed democratic participation (such as their emphasis on petitioning the government) can offer reminders about how to remain engaged after voting is done—and the other ways Americans can help safeguard democracy.
