From Oct. 14-16, family members and friends of current Carls flocked to campus for this year’s Family Weekend. Held every fall during midterm break, Family Weekend is an opportunity for families to get a taste of student life and explore campus through faculty presentations, tours, open houses, performances and other fun activities.

This year had both virtual and in-person options, with some events being live streamed for those who could not make it to campus. The homecoming games for football and volleyball, for example, were streamed on Carleton’s website.

The homecoming football game was especially notable this year. Not only did the Knights up their winning streak to 6-0 with a 56-20 win over St. Scholastica, remaining the only undefeated team in the MIAC, the playing field at Laird Stadium was dedicated during halftime to Bob Sullivan, the “winningest coach” in Carleton football history.

On Friday, parents and other family members and friends on campus took advantage of convocation in Skinner Chapel with featured speaker Jose Antonio Vargas. Vargas—a human rights activist, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Emmy-nominated filmmaker and Tony-nominated producer—shared his story as an undocumented immigrant and outlined his journey so far as an immigration reform activist.

Weekend visitors also enjoyed the Music Department Showcase, a cappella performances, and the Research and Internship Symposium, which included posters and presentations from hundreds of students about their summer research projects and internships.

Although the weather hovered around freezing at times, students and their families and friends enjoyed picnics on the Bald Spot, campus tours and photo ops on the Carleton sign with beautiful fall colors blooming in the background.
