Deborah Appleman, chair of educational studies and Hollis L. Caswell professor of educational studies, recently published a new book titled “Literature and the New Culture Wars: Triggers, Cancel Culture, and the Teacher’s Dilemma.” In her book, she examines the effects of cancel culture and trigger warnings on the teaching of literature and argues for the importance of teaching controversial texts.

Publishers Weekly reviewed it as “an invigorating call for educators ‘to continue to teach challenging texts.'”
