Journalist, author and tech expert Clive Thompson will deliver Carleton College’s weekly convocation address on Friday, Feb. 19, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. over Zoom. In his presentation, “Where Do Big Ideas Come From?” he will discuss how technology is changing our minds forever and reveal how modern technology is making us smarter, more innovative and better connected.
One of the most prominent technology journalists, Thompson is respected for long-form journalism that delves into science, literature, history and philosophy. He specializes in writing not merely about the inventors of technologies, but about how everyday people use them—often quite unpredictably. In his book, “Smarter Than You Think,” he explores the societal benefits of technological innovation, and in his recent book, “Coders: Makings of a New Tribe and the Remaking of the World,” Thompson looks at the intersections of technology and human experience by peeking behind the curtain of Silicon Valley to dismantle the stereotype of the lone (male) genius coder.
A contributing editor for Wired and a contributor toThe New York Times, Thompson also writes for Mother Jones and Smithsonian Magazine and is the tech consultant for the Canadian Broadcasting Company’s Q radio program. His work has won several awards, including an Overseas Press Council Award and a Mirror Award. Thompson was also named a 2002-2003 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Thompson received BA from the University of Toronto.
Convocation is sponsored by Carleton College Events. For more information, including disability accommodations, call (507) 222-4308.
