Photography Exhibit in Carleton Library Focuses on Housing Issues for Veterans
An exhibit of photographs currently on display in the Gould Library takes a provocative look at housing issues faced by Minnesota veterans of war. Entitled “Portraits of Home: Veterans in Search of Shelter in Greater Minnesota,” the exhibit runs through March 22. A special opening reception and panel discussion, moderated by Julia Reid the ACT Center, will take place on Monday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Gould Library Athenaeum. Both the exhibit and the opening reception are free and the public is invited to attend.

“Portraits of Home” tells the story of the housing problems facing Minnesota veterans and their families. The photos, newly commissioned for the exhibit, are accompanied by narratives describing the difficulties these veterans have faced in finding adequate and affordable housing. There are more than 50 photographs in the exhibit, by documentary photographers including Stormi Greener, Cathy ten Broeke, Brian Lesteberg, Scott Streble, Chante Wolf, and Carlos Gonzales. Several of these photographers have won prestigious honors for their past work.
The exhibit is curated by the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund (GMHF), a private, nonprofit group that supports the creation of affordable housing for working-class families in the 80 counties of Greater Minnesota. Since its creation, the GMHF has given in excess of $100 million to create over 7,500 affordable housing units.
“Portraits of Home” comes to Carleton thanks to a collaboration between the GMHF and the Acting in the Community Together (ACT) Center as part of ACT’s annual Civic Engagement Series. Each winter, ACT sponsors a number of events at Carleton relating to social justice issues. This year’s focus is on health and society.
The ACT Center is Carleton’s volunteering and community involvement program, which works to enable students to engage in the off-campus community through a variety of service projects, and to promote thoughtful action towards social change. There are currently over 35 ACT projects ongoing in Northfield, Faribault, and the Twin Cities.
