Carleton’s renowned Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble performs in concert

The Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble will perform in concert on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The program will include Chinese music ranging from traditional to modern compositions, with performances on traditional bowed strings, plucked strings, winds, and percussion instruments.

The Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble will perform in concert on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The program will include Chinese music ranging from traditional to modern compositions, with performances on traditional bowed strings, plucked strings, winds, and percussion instruments. The concert will include performances by the World Music Chamber Ensemble, the Chinese Music Ensemble, and the Korean Drum Combo. This event is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Gao Hong, the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble has performed to much acclaim at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Mall of America, the University of Minnesota, and at numerous conferences and Chinese celebrations through the region.

Student musicians include:

World Music Chamber Ensemble: Thomas Bertschinger on piano; Camille Braun and Katherine Koza on violin; Ju Yun Kim on clarinet; Douglas Totten on guitar; Emily Pollard and Wing Hei Agnes Tse on vocals; Shatian Wang on guzheng; and Jin Lee conducting and on violin.

Korean Drum Combo: Jin Lee, Sung Min Lee, Nayon Park, Ji Young Lee, and Shiny Choi.

Chinese Music Ensemble: Yijun Wang on dizi; Camille Braun, Jin Lee, Michelle Marinello, and Yue Wu on violin; Yuedong Merritt and Huahua Zhong on erhu; Gege Zhang on guqin; Qiyuan Hu, Heqing Huang, Yijun Wang and Shatian Wang on guzheng; Zi Ming on accordion; Yuheng Miao on xiao; Tine Liu on piano; Sijin Chen on zhongruan; and Sherry Gu on yangqin.

Ensemble director Gao Hong is a renowned Chinese pipa player and composer, who graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she studied with pipa master Lin Shicheng. She has received numerous awards and honors at home and abroad. In 2005 Gao Hong became the first traditional musician to be awarded the prestigious Bush Artist Fellowship, and in 2012 she became the only musician in any genre to win four McKnight Artist Fellowships for Performing Musicians. She has received numerous commissions and has performed countless U.S. and world premieres of pipa concerti with organizations such as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Heidelberg Philharmonic, Buenos Aires Philharmonic, and many others.
