Faculty pianist Matthew McCright presents “There and Back Again”
The program will feature an eclectic mix of American blues, jazz, and musical theater.
Carleton College faculty pianist Matthew McCright will perform in concert on Friday, October 5 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. in the Applebaum Recital Hall at the Weitz Center for Creativity.
McCright will perform a program of music titled, “There and Back Again,” featuring new music that “traverses, breaks, loops, and tips the hat” to the iconic music of American blues, jazz, and musical theater. The concert will showcase McCright’s recent CD release, “What Is Left Behind” (2018), a collection of compositions that McCright describes as “piano music that defines, reshapes, and narrates the experiences of the composers by way of migration, passing, and journey.”
The performance will also feature the world premiere of Sean Friar’s “Elastic Loops 2018,” along with works from Sondheim, Bresnick, Opel, Mazzariello, Mazzoli, Moya, Rakowski, and Willie Dixon.
Considered to be one of the most sought-after contemporary pianists of his generation, McCright has thrilled audiences and critics alike with imaginative programming that places the greatest piano repertoire alongside the music of today’s most innovative composers. In addition to releasing six solo CDs of original music, McCright has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.
A native of Pennsylvania, McCright completed his B.M. in piano from Westminster College, M.M. from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory, and D.M.A from the University of Minnesota. For more information, visit McCright’s website.
