Renowned economist Tim Leunig to deliver Carleton convocation
In his presentation, titled, “What Makes a Great Education? Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century,” he emphasizes the importance of cultivating creativity in our educational system.
Renowned economist Tim Leunig will deliver Carleton College’s weekly convocation address on Friday, Jan. 17, from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. In his presentation, titled, “What Makes a Great Education? Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century,” he argues that knowledge is the only firm foundation for the creativity our societies need if we are to tackle the economic, social and environmental challenges that our world faces over the next 50 years.
Leunig currently serves as chief analyst and chief scientific adviser at the Department of Education in the United Kingdom and economic adviser on housing supply at the Department for Communities and Local Government. He also is an associate professor of economic history at the London School of Economics, and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Statistical Society. He previously served as chief economist at CentreForum, a London-based education policy think tank.
A distinguished visitor-in-residence in Carleton’s economics department, Leunig’s research interests include the effects of new technology on productivity in Britain; links between learning-by-doing, labor turnover and labor productivity; and the determinants of economic heights in Britain.
Leunig received his B.A., MPhil, and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Oxford.
