Conservative feminist activist Karin Agness to deliver April 5 convocation

Conservative feminist activist Karin Agness will deliver Carleton’s weekly convocation address on Friday, April 5, from 10:50-11:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. In her presentation, titled “Feminism and Conservatism: Dividing Lines and Possibilities for Unity,” Agness will discuss her mission to expand intellectual diversity on campuses and explain how one can be both conservative and pro-woman.

Agness is founder and president of the Network of enlightened Women (NeW), the foremost organization of conservative women on college and university campuses in the United States. NeW seeks bipartisan solutions to feminist issues and aims to diversify political thought on campus through discussions of politics, gender and conservative principles. Founded in 2004 when Agness was a student at University of Virginia, NeW now has chapters at more than 20 colleges and universities in the United States and hosts a national conference in Washington, D.C., every summer.

Agness is editor of She’s Conservative: Stories of Trials and Triumphs on America’s College Campuses and a contributor to Forbes. She has also published editorials in The Washington Post, Politico, The Atlantic, The Boston Herald and National Review Online. In 2012, Agness was selected for the Forbes 30-under-30 list for law and policy, and in 2014, was named by Fortune as one of the 55 most influential women on Twitter. She has been a resident fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics and is a senior fellow with the Independent Women’s Forum.

In addition to her work with NeW, Agness practiced law at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, D.C. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Law.
