Nancy Wilkie, William H. Laird Professor of Classics, Anthropology, and the Liberal Arts, Emerita, participated in a meeting of the Cultural Property Advisory Committee at the State Department from May 2 through 4. At that meeting the committee, of which she has been a member since 2003, heard a request from the government of Ecuador for protection of its antiquities by the U.S. government. In addition, the committee heard a request from the government of China for an extension of its agreement. The committee makes its recommendation to the President, who can approve the negotiation of a bilateral agreement in which certain categories of antiquities illegally removed from their country of origin can be seized by U.S. Customs and repatriated to the countries from which they were illicitly exported.
