Manduca Convenes a Workshop on Coastal Hazards, Risk and Environmental Justice

Cathryn Manduca, Director, Science Education Resource Center, was co-convener of an InTeGrate workshop titled “Coastal Hazards, Risks, and Environmental Justice” held at Tulane University May 20 through 22. Taking place between the fifth anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon blow out in the Gulf of Mexico and the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the workshop enabled teams of faculty members and administrators, especially from minority-serving institutions, to explore the interplay among Coastal Hazards, Risk and Environmental Justice and develop plans for actions that they will take back to their own campuses to better incorporate these issues into their curriculum and campus programs. The workshop also included a tour of post-Katrina New Orleans that provided an opportunity to see the interface between Coastal Hazards, Risk and Environmental Justice in a very personal way.
